What kind of doctor do I see if I think I have skin cancer?

In Australia, given the high incidence of skin cancers and a comparatively low ratio of dermatologists to the population, General Practitioners (GPs) trained in skin cancer management play a crucial role in the early detection and treatment of skin conditions.

Dedicated Skin Cancer GPs undergo specialised training through institutions like the Skin Cancer College Australasia (SCCA) and The University of Queensland’s skin cancer program. They are proficient in conducting thorough skin checks, diagnosing, and treating various skin cancers within their scope.

For routine skin checks, it’s practical to see a dedicated Skin Cancer GP. As we manage a significant portion of skin cancer cases and are equipped to provide comprehensive care. In cases of more complex skin cancers, we collaborate with Dermatopathologists, Dermatologists, Plastic surgeons, and Radiation Oncologist, ensuring a multidisciplinary approach to treatment.

This system not only makes skin cancer detection and treatment accessible but also efficient, leveraging the widespread availability of GPs across Australia.

In 2013/14, GPs managed 3 times as many Melanomas as Dermatologist.
